DANNY SABRA
I started playing violin at the age of twelve and was enrolled in the Omaha Area Youth Orchestra (OAYO), where I played in all three orchestras and an OAYO-sponsored string quartet, which was coached by Omaha Symphony members. I went on to study violin performance and music composition at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), where I played with both UNO’s Heartland Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestras.
I served as section leader for second violins and as associate concert master, and I played with numerous ensembles, including a jazz combo and various string quartets. I was even selected to play a violin solo with the band Kansas on the song “Dust in The Wind” the last time they were in Omaha.
As a composer, I’ve attended master classes with famed American composers Michael Daugherty and Abbie Betinis.
During my senior year of college, I won the Robert M. Spire Composition Competition and was subsequently commissioned to compose a piece for the Papillion/LaVista High School band. I have also been commissioned to compose pieces for several other organizations such as The Millard North High School Orchestra and the Omaha Conservatory of Music. The latter commission included transcribing Omaha Native American songs, and writing three pieces for student string players as well as one piece for mixed orchestra and choir, which was comprised of Omaha Tribe traditional melodies.
Since 2006, I have performed as a singer/songwriter, a bluegrass band fiddle player in many gigs across the Midwest, a session musician for several bands such as Tie These Hands and local bands Skypiper and Anniversaire, and a violinist with Sleeping At Last.
Since graduating Suma Cum Laude from UNO, I’ve worked as a composer on commission and as a music teacher of harmonica, violin, viola, guitar, mandolin, and music composition at Schmitt Music, Omaha Conservatory of Music, and Lewis and Clark Middle School.
