MICHELLE METTY

I began playing violin when I was 8 years old in Poughkeepsie, NY. Orchestra was always my favorite part of the day, and in high school I got involved in music on a deeper level though assisting younger orchestras and taking on a few private students. I picked up a viola for the first time when I was 15 and fell in love with the darker and warmer tone.

I majored in music performance, studying viola with David Rose at SUNY Fredonia. But I knew that I wanted to teach more than anything, so I pursued a double master’s degree at Ithaca College in Suzuki Pedagogy and Viola Performance, studying with Carrie-Reuning Hummel and Kyle Armbrust. The Suzuki Method uses the “Mother Tongue” approach. The core pedagogical structure and accompanying philosophy are modeled after the way we learn to speak our native language, the most natural learning process humans go through.

In my teaching, I strive to inspire passion and love of all music, foster individuality, and provide a positive, nurturing environment for creativity and learning. I deeply believe in the Suzuki philosophy: that every child can learn, and that music has the power to shape character and connect us all.
