NICK FILI
I grew up in Benson and got my first drum set at the age of 9. By the age of 12, I was playing jazz in the school lab band, and by the age of 15, I was playing in local bands and getting paid to do what I love most - playing the drums.
While still in Omaha, I studied with the late, great Luigi Waites. I eventually moved to Denton, TX, to study Jazz at the University of North Texas.
At UNT, I had the opportunity to study with amazing instructors, including Henry Okstel and Ed Soph, and received some of the best technical training available. Although I majored in Jazz, I also performed in West African, Afro-Cuban, Latin and Brazilian percussion ensembles.
In 1991, I formed and led a jazz trio/quintet, and was blessed to be able to draw from a pool of truly great musicians. For the past 28 years, I have led a jazz group and played sessions in the Dallas/Fort Worth markets, across a multitude of styles.
After nearly 30 years as a working musician and educator in the Dallas/Fort Worth market, I recently returned to take care of my mother, who still lives in Benson. Upon my return, I was thrilled to see young musicians playing jazz in Benson!!! I found out that they were students with the 402 Lesson Studio, and I knew immediately that I needed to be a part of the Collective.
I feel blessed to be able to use my passion for music to lead worship in some amazing churches and ministries. I have had the opportunity to record with a number of very talented worship artists.
As an educator, I like to tailor my lessons to my student’s unique technical level and stylistic passion, while broadening their musical awareness and equipping them to express their musical ideas with groove and finesse.
